What is Yorkits?
find out more - click here
Yorkits is a community based project -where volunteers come together to create washable and reusable feminine hygiene kits for girls in developing countries. Without these kits, girls are unable to attend school during menstruation and miss a significant part of their education.
How does Yorkits work?
- Workshops: We conduct workshops in York and beyond to assemble the cleverly designed kits. These kits are packed into attractive drawstring bags and can last each girl up to 3 years.
- Distribution: Our volunteers deliver the kits to schools, colleges, community groups, women’s refuges, and refugee camps worldwide. We provide templates and instructions for making additional kits and have seed-funded schools and communities in Africa and Asia to produce their own kits using local materials.
Providing Yorkits in many countries allows girls to attend school like the boys and enables women to trade in markets weekly without risking their livelihoods. The kits offer access to health, hygiene, education, and dignity.
How can you help?
You can join our workshops, held each week at Tesco Askham barr community room. We need various skills, including drawing around templates, cutting, sewing, and assembling the kits. There’s always an opportunity for tea, coffee, chat, and friendship.
